Are questions about analyzing a composition allowed?
Consider a piece of music that one is trying to analyze (let's say chord progressions), but he is struggling with doing so. He can tell that the section works, but he can't tell how.
Would a question to the effect of "can someone help me analyze the music theory behind this section of this song" be on-topic?
Does this need to be a composition that's "out there," so to speak, or would even original compositions be allowed under this rubric?

Yes, but with limits
I don't see why this would be a problem, provided the question is specific enough - asking for an analysis of an entire (e.g.) opera is a bit on the 'too much' side, in my opinion.
Asking for general/specific details on (part of) a section of some music however (perhaps with some appreciation of the wider context of the piece/time period), would be something I'd be interested in having.
