Q&A

Why did Pierre Boulez gesticulate way less in 2006, than in 1963, whilst conducting Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring?

  1. Please compare and contrast Pierre Boulez conducting Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring? Here's him conducting l'Orchestre de Radio-Canada in 1963

vs. Orquesta Filarmonica della Scala in 2006.

  1. Aside from aging — why else did Boulez flit his arms, shimmy his upper limb, and writhe his trunk, much more in 1963? His 1963 conducting looks like karate chops!

In 2006, he flitters his arms much less often, and less forcefully! He no longer rocks or shimmies his body! I see no karate chops from 1963!
