Question Should posting on Meta affect reputation?
When we launched this community, we did not yet have the ability to set different reputation grants for different categories. We've had this for a while but we failed to follow up before now, sorry. Do you want us to change posts on Meta to not award rep for upvotes or subtract it for downvotes? ...

Comment Post #286566 Good question. I notice that in an earlier verse she refers to going to Madrid and Barcelona, so I wonder if "Spanish boots of Spanish leather" are a broader reference or because of that geographical context. I hope someone can dig up some details.

Comment Post #286146 I believe music software is on-topic here. Thanks for sharing the solution after figuring it out.

Comment Post #286075 Not only did families flee the area because they could no longer survive there, but many of them had debts and lost their homes and land to foreclosures. The [Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_Bowl) has a lot more information on both the agricultural and human costs of the drought...

Answer A: Is Music an appropriate place for questions about digital music collaboration?
Speaking personally (i.e. don't ascribe more authority just 'cause I'm staff), I think such questions should be welcome. They're about making music; I don't see anything in the community's scope that limits this to music made on physical instruments.

Question How can we grow this community?
Codidact's communities have a lot of great content that is helping people on the Internet. Our communities are small, though, and sustainable communities depend on having lots of active, engaged participants. The folks already here are doing good work; our challenge is to find more people like you ...

Question Who should the temporary moderators be?
As we have set up communities here on the Codidact network we've been appointing temporary moderators. Ultimately, of course, we want each community to choose its own moderators; we've been doing this as a stopgap, while communities are forming, so Codidact staff don't have to handle all the flags (...

Comment Post #284620 Quite true on that last point! I imagine perfect pitch could make it worse, but it's plenty painful even without.

Comment Post #284620 I was going to ask about fixed temperament (or its absence), but you already brought it up. I don't know this time period well; was equal tuning the established norm by then?

Comment Post #284416 I, too, would like to find a solution for this problem, because even when everyone present is vaccinated, sometimes masks are required. I've tried a few "singer's masks" and none of them have let me really sing. I've seen, but not tried, "frames" that you place between a mask and your face that are...

Comment Post #284527 Thank you! Yes, I meant the one being played with a bow, not the mandolin. It looks like she's pinching the melody string between her fingers, which, like a fret, would shorten the pitch-producing part of the string. That's what I meant by "fretting between her fingers"; clearly there are no actua...

Question What is this bowed, fretted, lyre-shaped instrument?
I came across this video and would like to know more about the instrument the woman is playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF9mtpw365c (Starting at 0:16.) The instrument is shaped sort of like a lyre, is being played with a bow, and it looks like she is "fretting" individual strings bet...

Comment Post #283061 I tried to fix it on EE and Physics, but when I fixed it on EE (and yes, *unchecked* the "all communities" box), it spread to Physics (expected) and also Music (unexpected, since the topic has been locally edited here). I guess we have to wait for a code fix, and meanwhile, since everybody else got ...

Answer A: Why was Stravinsky alleged to be a lousy conductor?
I can't speak to Stravinsky specifically, so perhaps this is not an answer to your question, but you also ask: > How could a skilled composer like him be unskilled at conducting? Composing, playing, and conducting are different (related) skills. A person can be an excellent performer, includin...

Comment Post #280506 Instead of looking for a question almost nobody can access, could you instead ask the question that *you* want to get an answer to? I'm putting this on hold in the meantime; when you edit we can reopen it. Thanks.

Comment Post #280414 My upvote is for having some way to type music inline; I don't know anything about MusixTex in particular. For larger things I'd probably use music software and upload an image, but I imagine it will be useful sometimes to include a short bit to illustrate one particular thing (a harmonic pattern, a...

Comment Post #280400 Thanks @JirkaHanika! Having never played a bowed instrument where continuous motion was possible, I had no idea. It sure *looks* like it's continuous, but that must be the effect of skill -- as you said, approaching zero duration. TIL.

Question (How) does bow shape affect playing the bowed psaltery?
Years ago I acquired a bowed psaltery, with a bow shaped something like this: curved bow Every psaltery bow I've seen "in person" has this arched shape. Bows for other instruments (like violins) have a flatter shape, like this: flat, not curved, bow I need to replace my bow, and I'm seei...

Answer A: Can we have a separate category for identification requests?
"Different guidelines" is one of the motivating use cases for categories. (See Rigorous Science on Scientific Speculation, for example, or Challenges on several communities.) It sounds like this is a case of that and a category would make sense. I think we can create a post type that would behav...

Welcome to the Codidact site for Music! We're glad you're here and we're excited to see what you will build. This community is starting "from scratch", without importing Q&A from other sites, so your community can set its own direction.[^1] We've set up two categories, Q&A ("main") and Meta. Us...
